Andrew said he learned how to do all of this from the intake to making the right mix of compost by taking classes and studying programs online. “I have a friend who has a facility in Wood County and he has been very helpful,” Andrew said. He added that it has also been a little bit of trial and error.
Now that The Mulch King is fully operational, they have a nice inventory of materials to sell. “Prices are a little less than other wholesale or retail prices around,” Andrew said. The Mulch King always has special promotions going on that makes a product priced less than competitive businesses. You can find coupons and promotions in The Mulch King’s Bedford Press ads or on The Mulch King, LLC Facebook page.
A big seller at The Mulch King is obviously mulch. “We have several varieties of mulch—different colors and grinding textures. We have black, brown and red. Our most popular color is triple black. It doesn’t mold, lose its color and it stays nice longer. It’s a high quality product,” Andrew said.
Compost is another big seller according to Andrew. They also carry topsoil that includes a premium blend that is double screened. River rock in two sizes, decorative boulders, driveway stone and asphalt millings, which can be used to make a drive back to a barn or a pad on which to park a camper or boat, are also products available at The Mulch King. If you need weed barrier material The Mulch King carries DOT approved weed barrier fabric. Straw bales are also available.
If you are unsure of how much of a material you need, such as mulch, for your project The Mulch King can help you with that. “We can figure out how much to buy. Estimates are free. Call us to find out how many yards to purchase, we get pretty close to what they need assuming measurements are right,” Andrew said.
If you need someone to deliver your purchase Andrew said, “We deliver anywhere from one yard to 10 yards with a fee of $50. More than one delivery or if they are close by we discount the fee.” If you have a truck or trailer to haul your purchase, they will load it for you.
The Mulch King currently has 9 employees that are either full time or part-time. Andrew’s wife Jody does the bookwork and computer work for the business. Andrew’s brother in-law runs the desk part-time.
The Mulch King has been so successful that Andrew is currently expanding the 100 percent green yard waste recycling facility. “We have an expansion going on—six acres in two spots to about double the size of the facility,” he said.
Andrew said he enjoys being able to work outside. Making a high quality finish material of what people consider as trash—it’s rewarding to do that,” he said. “People come here to drop stuff off and they don’t know we have things for sale. I want to get the word out to people that we have high quality materials for sale,” he said.
Andrew is also the owner of Turfinators Lawn Service that does lawn care, landscaping and snow removal. “We do commercial properties for some HOA’s and are transitioning to the township. We will eventually run everything out of Smith Rd.,” Andrew said.
Business hours for The Mulch King are currently Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. For questions or more information call The Mulch King at (913) 732-9253.
Don’t burn your yard waste, recycle it at The Mulch King, LLC!

Fall is officially here and there is still time for homeowners to plant things in their yards like trees, shrubs, perennials and spring blooming bulbs. The Mulch King, LLC carries a variety of materials you need to complete your fall planting projects. The business also serves as a drop-off site for your yard waste, such as leaves, grass clippings and brush.
The Mulch King is located at 110 Smith Rd. Temperance at the corner of Smith and Telegraph roads. Business owner Andrew Nycz purchased two parcels of land that totaled 24 acres with the largest parcel zoned for a business. He chose Bedford Township with the idea of, in addition to starting The Mulch King,  moving his Toledo business to the area and eventually building a house on the other parcel where he and his wife Jody would live.
“We currently live in West Toledo and had wanted to move to the area for several years. I wanted to go somewhere where there wasn’t a business already set up there like The Mulch King. I looked at property and eventually found the two parcels,” Andrew said. “My goal was to have both businesses and our home within five or six blocks of each other in Bedford Township.”
The Mulch King has developed over the past couple of years. The business started out in the fall of 2017 as a place where Bedford residents could drop off leaves, brush and grass from the fall clean-up of their yards. “In 2018 we started expanding toward the back of the property and started selling a couple kinds of mulch and topsoil,” Andrew said. “This year is our first full time year of being open for business for all of the things we have available here.”:
For fall leaf and brush disposal, Bedford Township homeowners have been burning the debris for years. With the continued building of homes in the area and more people moving to the community, the smoke from burning has sometimes been an issue.
As a solution, this year Bedford Township has partnered with The Mulch King to allow residents to drop off their yard waste at The Mulch King at no charge through December 15. This is a free service for residents of Temperance, Lambertville and Samaria. Local commercial lawn businesses can drop off waste but there is a fee.
There are a couple of simple rules to follow when dropping of yard waste. Grass clippings, leaves and brush should be separated as there are separate drop-off areas for each of these. Garbage or non-natural debris should not be mixed in. If leaves or clippings are in plastic bags, the bags need to be emptied and taken with you or disposed of in a container provided at the site.
When you drive in, you will be greeted by a person at the small office building. They will verify residency and direct you to where to unload the yard waste. Even if you have been at The Mulch King before, stop at the office first, sometimes they need to have you unload at either the right or left side of the pile.
This drop-off service is very popular with the community. “We usually see over 100 vehicles a day. From May 2018 to May 2019 we have taken in 7,500 yards of leaves, 9,000 yards of grass clippings and 20,500 yards of brush that all would have been burned in the township,” Andrew said. “We’re thanked by the people in the township who bring stuff in.”
Andrew said that The Mulch King is required to be registered with the State and is regulated by the Federal EPA that has storm water pollution controls. “We just had our first official annual inspection with the state. We were given high praises for everything,” Andrew said. “They said we have one of the nicest facilities in the State of Michigan and that they were going to recommend that anyone that applies to build a facility in the State like this to come and look at The Mulch King,” he said.
The Mulch King turns this yard waste that would normally be burned into the products it sells that is used to enhance the yards around the area. The processing is all done on site at The Mulch King.
